WHAT'S NEW

Dr. Margaret Sukhram is new CAMSA President

Margaret Sukhram, EdD, RN, MPH, CNM was elected to the Presidency of CAMSA at its annual general meeting held January 20, 2012 at its offices in New Hyde Park, NY.

Dr. Sukhram was one of the founding member of CAMSA 10 years ago and pledged to continue and build on the accomplishments of her predecessors during her tenure.

In her remarks, she congratulated outgoing President Dr. Ed Alleyne and his executive for the accomplishments of their term of office and solicited the help of all members in the planning of appropriate activities to mark CAMSA's 10 year anniversary. She also pledged an aggressive recruitment effort to bring in new blood, raise CAMSA's profile and expand its local and Caribbean basin activities.

Other elected officers were: Dr. Patricia Nicholas, Vice President, a newly created post; Nigel Nicholas,Treasurer; and Colleen Brathwaite, Secretary.

Congratulations to all.


CAMSA - BACA Symposium on  Pancreatic Cancer held September 24, 2011

CAMSA joined the Barbados Cancer Association USA (BACA), Inc. in presenting a Symposium on Pancreatic Cancer on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Brroklyn, NY. The symposium was held under the distinguished patronage of Hon. Lennox Price, Consul General of Barbados at New York and faculty were: Ed Alleyne, Phd, President of CAMSA, Neil Mandava, Chief of Surgery, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Chrisita Powlett, MB, BS, Registrar, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hon. Sylvia Hinds-Radix, JD, Administrative Judge for Civil Matters, Second Judicial District, NY, Janice Powers, JD of the law firm of Aaronson Rappaport Feinstein & Deutsch, LLP and Eleni Coffinas, JD of the law firm of Sullivan Papain Block MJcGrath & Cannavo, PC.

The medical faculty provided an overview of pancreatic cancer in Barbados and the US and the legal experts spoke to the question of health care privacy for public officials using the illness and death of Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson as a focal point.

The symposium was well attended.

CAMSA Fund Raiser held Saturday May 21

CAMSA held its annual fund raiser and awards event on Saturday May 21 at Glen Terrace, 5313 Avenue N, Brooklyn, NY. Proceeds will go to support medical work at the Rouck clinic near Anse-a-Veau, Haiti and our scholarship program for young Caribbean students pursuing health care studies.

Honorees were:

Association for Aid to the Physically Challenged Children of Barbados (AAPCCB): for unstinting support to physically challenged children in Barbados.

Dr. Cynthia Degazon, Nursing Professor: for a stellar academic career in nursing; for scholarship; for teaching; and for effective mentorship of Caribbean and other students.

Dr. Mathieu Eugene, physician and legislator: for his commitment to the needs of the underserved and underrepresented in his constituency and beyond, especially Haiti.

Dr. Barbara Paul, microbiologist: for scholarship, teaching; and for meritorious service to CAMSA as a past president.

Brianne Brathwaite and Givan Hinds are CAMSA's 2011 Scholarship Winners

Brianne Brathwaite a graduating High School senior at Edgemont High School, Greenburgh, NY and Givan Hinds an undergraduate at the Seven Days Adventist University in Michigan are 2011 CAMSA scholarship winners. Brianne is of Barbadian heritage and plans to study Forensic Science at the University of New Haven and Givan is of Guyanese heritage and plans a career in Physical Therapy. Congratulations.


CAMSA Symposium on Haiti: Then and Now held on Saturday, January 8, 2011

CAMSA hosted a symposium on Haiti: Then and Now (One Year Later), at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, January 8, 2011.

The symposium explored health issues relating to the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, looked at the current health status of the Haitian people in the context of the social, political and economic milieu, and discussed how best NGOs within the Caribbean Diaspora could best support the health sector in Haiti.

The symposium which was open to the general public was addressed by the Consul General of Haiti at New York, the Honorable Felix Augustin and by District 40 New York City Councilman Dr. Mathieu Eugene.

Featured speakers were former Haitian Congressman Frantz Robert “Bob” Monde, Dr. Chantale Baril, a neonatologist and pediatrician from the public and private medical sectors in Haiti; Dr. Patricia Nicholas, CAMSA’s Haiti Outreach Coordinator and Immediate Past President of CAMSA, and Dr. Paul Nacier of the Association of Haitian Physicians Practicing Abroad (AMHE). Dr. Henry Paul, President of the New York Chapter of the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH) participated in the panel discussion.

Faculty also included: Dr. Ed Alleyne, President of CAMSA, Dr. Deborah Brathwaite, CAMSA board member and Attending Physician, Division of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. Dr. O’Neall Parris a former President of CAMSA moderated the symposium.


Dr. Patricia Nicholas made 7th working visit to Haiti in February

Dr. Patricia Nicholas made her seventh working visit to Haiti in mid February. She was accompanied by Adeline Mucci who works for the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System and is a CAMSA member, and Tomasina Olithant, Social Worker at SUNY Stony Brook. They provided clinical and support services at the Rouck Clinic near Anse-a-Veau.  Dr. Nicholas has assumed an expanded role in Rouck as head of Kindest Hearts a Long Island based non profit whose mission is to stimulate  comprehensive development activities there including but not limited to education and income generation.

 

CAMSA and BACA donate a laparoscope to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Barbados

CAMSA and the Barbados Cancer Association (BACA) recently jointly donated a laparoscope with light source to the QEH.  The items were accepted here in New York on November 3, 2010 by Dr. Selma Jackman, Consultant Surgeon at the QEH, on behalf of the hospital.  The presentation was made by Dr. O'Neall Parris, Chairman of BACA, Marcel Kennedy, Vice Chairman of BACA and Dr. Ed Alleyne, President of CAMSA.
 



                                         

 

OUTREACH

CAMSA has developed an Outreach Program that conducts medical missions to underserved communities throughout the Caribbean. In addition to its missions, CAMSA organizes conferences and town hall meetings geared towards health promotion and the prevention of chronic diseases. Our program also includes health screening and distribution of literature.
